What is the difference between Art therapy and Expressive Arts Therapy?

Creative Arts Therapy includes independent modalities of art (visual), music, drama, and dance movement). While Expressive arts therapy utilizes the intermodal form to fluidly transition among the four creative art forms. Important to consider when selecting the type of therapy for you- a creative arts therapist specializing in one art form completes a master level training (2-3 years) to study one particular art form, while an expressive arts therapist would complete a master level training studying most, if not all of the art forms. Therefore, the level of depth would be slightly different. However, it is important to reflect on your own personal interest before approaching a creative or expressive arts therapist and start a conversation about what would be the best fit for you.
