What does art therapist do?

Art therapist work in diverse settings such as school, hospital, prison, rehab center, counseling center, community center, to provide psychotherapy and support along with art modality, to help individual to express their needs and develop solution and coping skills, so that the service receiver might gain insight in their current situation and thus promote healthy changes in life.

The Expertise of a Qualified Art Therapist

A qualified Art Therapist has completed a postgraduate and/or masters intensive training course lasting two to three years. Training includes art, psychology and psychotherapy. Art therapists are keenly aware of and trained to work with symbolism and help clients to understand their personal connection to this symbolism as it emerges in artwork. Art Therapists are practicing under ethical codes of practice. “Art Therapist’s unique skills and knowledge in the areas of nonverbal communication enable them to develop avenues for expression not possible through traditional methods” (The South Florida Art Psychotherapy Institute).

Please know that therapy modalities are not one size fit all, but we encourage you to reach out and meet a professional to discuss or experience whether art therapy is right for you.

How to choose the right art therapist for my agency/ organization?

Art Psychotherapy involves one to complete a master level training in a foreign country (since Hong Kong does not have a master-level program yet), in addition to completion of 350+ supervised clinical practice hours. Another positive indication that you're in good hands if they are registered professionals in the country where they recieved their master level training at. Please reach out to us (enquiry@hkaat.org) if you would like to verify one's qualification of whether they have received adequate training and education to provide art psychotherapy services.
